Moving involves risk and your removalist cannot be held legally liable for anything that happens that is not the removalists fault..
In other words, you are not covered for unforeseen circumstances or accidents unless you have separately insured your goods. That’s why we recommend that you take out full cover insurance which protects you against accidental damage to your belongings and property.
As Acrobat Removals are accredited movers with AFRA, this allows us legally to be an Authorised Representative of a Licensed Insurance Broker, in this case Aldridge and Street, a division of Cowden (Vic) Pty Ltd AFSL LICENCE NUMBER 245658.
You may have flicked through the Yellow Pages or spoken to other removalists on the phone. If you have, you are likely to have been led to believe that if you move with a certain removalist he will give you free transit insurance to go with your move, just like you might get fries with your burger at McDonalds. We believe that in most cases when a removalist offers you free transit insurance you won’t receive any documentation as proof of insurance. Therefore if you are offered free insurance, it is likely to be an Indemnity Policy which actually covers the removalist, believe it or not, AGAINST you, the customer, in a court of law.
If a removalist offers you any type of coverage (whether its for free or not ) ask him for documentation with your name as the beneficiary on it. If he doesn’t support it with documentation you can expect his insurance to be null and void because he is breaking the law. If this is the case call AFRA 1800 671 806.
You may also be surprised to know that for any removals insurance to be legal, it must contain the following
This is a legal requirement of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission for any offer of insurance or financial service.
Imaginary insurance is not insurance. It is imaginary. Don’t be fooled.
Imagine you have been convinced to move with a certain removalist ( a non AFRA member ) because he offered you free transit insurance for your move. We’ll call him Happy Joe Happy Removalist.
You find that his truck has ended up at the bottom of a ravine, on fire, and your belongings are in his truck. He said that you had free transit insurance. Whew!
But wait. How are you going to claim when you realise you don’t know who the insurance company is. They obviously don’t know who you are either.
What are you going to do now that you realise the gravity of the situation?
Once the dust has settled your only recourse is to take him to court and sue him.
In court you find that the insurance company that you thought was representing you, is actually representing the removalist AGAINST you in your claim for compensation.
So it becomes a battle for compensation between small you and the big insurance company with unlimited funds.
This is a situation which you would never have dreamed you would be in when you went with Happy Joe Happy and his free insurance.
Of course, there is a way to move without the possibility of this happening.
Move with an AFRA member, and have your belongings legally insured by a registered insurance agent such as Acrobat Removals. Also make sure that you take out full cover insurance so you are covered, not just for when the truck is moving, but for basically any event which includes moving out and moving in. If moving into storage take out storage insurance.
Doing this will give you the peace of mind in the knowledge that you will never have to deal with Happy Joe Happy Removalist or his insurance company.
