Tips & Advice from removalists you can trust

Pre – Pack

  • Always use butchers paper and bubble wrap rather than newspaper.
  • Pack heavier, smaller items such as crockery and cutlery in smaller, book type cartons and lighter bulkier items in larger, standard cartons.
  • As you do your pre-pack, write down the contents and which room the carton is to go to, on the tape in texta.
  • Commence your pre-pack at least one month in advance. Start with the items you are not likely to want till after the move. E.g – opposite seasons clothing and bedding. If you can pack just one or two boxes per day, you’ll be amazed how much you will accomplish in a short time and how much less stressful it will make your job.
  • If it will fit in a box, put it in a box – e.g. lamps and shades. The carton will protect them and you will find that everything stacks better in the truck, making the job quicker, easier and therefore cheaper.

Pre – Move

  • Leave one box marked “IMPORTANT” for items that you could require unexpectedly e.g. medicines, toilet paper, cleaning products, phone chargers, pet food, kettle, tea, coffee, sugar.
  • Keep cleaning stuff together if you are going to want to clean when your removalist has left the upload address.
  • For the month leading up to your move, try to use all the food you have accumulated in the pantry, freezer and fridge. There will be less packing to do. Also you may be surprised how much food you can cull from what is out of date and also how much money you can save on shopping leading up to your move.
  • When you empty the fridge and freezer, do the job properly. Defrost and clean them thoroughly and remember to empty the water accumulator at the back of the fridge. Make it a real spring clean. You may even spray with vanilla essence. You won’t regret it.
  • If you are able to dismantle items such as beds and remove things such as the legs from your trampoline it will make your move quicker which will make it cheaper.
  • Wrap the glass carousel from your microwave in a towel and put it back in.
  • If you have tight doorways, have the doors removed ( our removalists can do this for you if you like). This will speed things up and minimise damages to lounge suites, larger items and doorways.
  • Start a rubbish pile in your front yard a fortnight before the move. As you find unwanted items throw them on the pile. It will make your move cheaper and your new address less cluttered. Be brutal. We can then come along and quote you on removing that pile as we have a rubbish removal divison.
  • Check the screws on your desks, tables and cheap furniture are not loose, because wonky furniture can literally fall apart when being handled. Simply go around and tighten with a screwdriver before the move.
  • It is a good idea to go to the post office and get your mail redirected before your move. The six month option is a good time frame.
  • You will probably want to change your mailing address for things such as RTA, electricity, gas, water, library, foxtel, school, bank.
  • Assemble all flammables such as LP gas bottles, fuel and also corrosives such as acid as well as paint onto an area on your garage floor. Take these yourself as they are prohibited from going in the truck with your furniture.
  • Due to the risk of fire your removalist should never take a mower with fuel in it. Therefore, prior to your move, empty all fuel then clean the outside and underside of the mower and catcher. This will make your removalist happy to take it on the truck and will also mean you won’t have to pay him to sweep out dead grass from the back of the truck.
  • Buy small adhesive dots from your newsagent. Stick the same colour dot to every item that will be going into a certain room and then place the same colour dot above the door to that room. There will be less need for you to play traffic cop at the front door which will give you more time for other things.

The Move

  • If the bins are full at the upload address, leave them on the street ready for emptying before you depart.
  • Make sure the driveway and path to the house is clear and trim any trees and bushes that could impede access. The closer the truck can get to the house, the quicker, and therefore cheaper your move will be.
  • Before leaving the upload address for the last time, walk around and check every room, cupboard and also the garage and yard for any forgotten and unseen items.
  • Leave 1/2 hour from when the fridge/freezer is installed to when you turn it on, so the gas can settle.
  • Whenever going into storage, ask your removalist for plastics to protect your lounges and mattresses. Also make sure your removalist has access to blankets to protect shiny surfaces.
  • Use the removalist to transport everything. That’s what you are paying him for. However, the exception to this is your valuables. Move jewellery, valuables and cash yourself.
  • Try to have your removalist start your move first thing in the morning at, say 7:30. This will make you first job of the day. Everyone will be fresher and happier and this will give you the whole day to move.
